Wind Turbines Are Neither Clean Nor Green and They Provide Zero Global Energy

The Spectator UK, Matt Ridley writes unclean, not green useless alternative energy.
The Global Wind Energy Council recently released its latest report, excitedly boasting that ‘the proliferation of wind energy into the global power market continues at a furious pace, after it was revealed that more than 54 gigawatts of clean renewable wind power was installed across the global market last year’.
You might even think,
…wind power is making a big contribution to world energy today. You would be wrong. Its contribution is still, after decades — nay centuries — of development, trivial to the point of irrelevance.
To the nearest whole number, what percentage of the world’s energy consumption was supplied by wind power in 2014, the last year for which there are reliable figures? Was it 20 per cent, 10 per cent or 5 per cent? None of the above: it was 0 per cent. That is to say, to the nearest whole number, there is still no wind power on Earth.
…together, wind and photovoltaic solar are supplying less than 1 per cent of global energy demand.
Do not take refuge in the idea that wind turbines could become more efficient. There is a limit to how much energy you can extract from a moving fluid, the Betz limit, and wind turbines are already close to it. Their effectiveness (the load factor, to use the engineering term) is determined by the wind that is available, and that varies at its own sweet will from second to second, day to day, year to year.
The point of running through these numbers is to demonstrate that it is utterly futile, on a priori grounds, even to think that wind power can make any significant contribution to world energy supply, let alone to emissions reductions, without ruining the planet. As the late David MacKay pointed out years back, the arithmetic is against such unreliable renewables.

It takes tons of fossil fuels to produce the tons of turbines and solar panels. Green energy is the most counterintuitive political, social and economic fantasy humankind has ever devised.

In Canada, Energy Poverty Rising [Goldstein, Toronto Sun]: “…more than one million households now spending more than 10% of their incomes solely on electricity and home heating fuel.” To be sure, in Ontario, it will continue rising until 2019.

Furthermore, “These numbers will rise in coming years as Canadian governments pour ever-increasing amounts of money into expensive and unreliable green energy projects such as wind turbines and solar panels, as well as introduce carbon pricing.” Not to mention the brazen cash grab all governments in Canada will make in the name of a Carbon Tax, in a country that is practically speaking carbon neutral.

“Meanwhile, in Ontario, Premier Kathleen Wynne’s Liberal government estimates the cap-and-trade carbon pricing scheme it will introduce next year will add $156 annually to the energy and gasoline bill of the average household in 2017 alone.”

Goldstein suggests mitigation of energy poverty by making sure that “100% of all monies raised through carbon pricing, which increases taxes and prices on consumption, will be returned directly to the public in income tax cuts and grants to the poor.” It would be a start, but in Canada and Ontario, it ain’t gonna happen, it would be too politically incorrect and impractical for governments that can’t/won’t balance their budgets because of the Left Wing obsession with the panacea of Deficit Financing.

WAINFLEET Media Release, aka The Wainfleet Resolution

Concerning Wainfleet Council Resolution passed on January 2016 calling on the Ontario government not to award more Feed-In-Tariff contracts for power generation from wind.

The Resolution has been endorsed by 51 other Councils in Ontario.  The list of Councils appears in page 2 of the embedded document released by Wainfleet Council: Now that coal-fired power plants have closed, the government should have met its carbon reduction goals for the electrical power system in Ontario which is now largely based on carbon-free hydroelectricity and nuclear power. This gives the province an opportunity to assess renewable generation alternatives that have less impact on the host communities.

Green Energy Only Works If You Tax Everything

Call it like it is: Andrew Follet in the Daily Caller. Without government subsidies, and I’ll add the current Canadian saviour, Deficit Financing, Green Energy cannot and will not ever be able to compete with conventional power sources!

Follow these conclusions:
1– conventional energy over the next decade will be less expensive than Green Energy
2– massive government subsidies are needed to make it work but not compete with conventional sources (now, it’s become, Greed Energy)
3– Green Energy  can only work if power prices are exceedingly high
4– Solar and Wind power are more than twice as costly as natural gas (and maybe even more than twice for coal and hydro, just a guess)
5– the “True-dough” and Wynne-lose governments are pushing the idea of a Carbon Tax to make power more expensive so that GREEN can SEEM to be competitive, never mind that we have approached a level of poverty caused by energy prices
6– Ireland, Sweden, Chile, and Finland have carbon taxation (so does the province of BC); however, Australia repealed its carbon tax in 2014 because it appeared to be harming the economy
7– no jurisdiction taxes carbon at a high enough rate to impact global CO2 emissions, and to do so all governments would have to tax everything
8– weaning ourselves off fossil fuels (to please Leonardo DiCaprio et al), ain’t gonna happen
9– beside high prices, Green Energy is UNRELIABLE, its output is unpredictable, and it tends to produce the most power at times it is least needed
10– even if the cost of fuel went up radically, Greed Energy would still need more subsidies

As long as SUBSIDIES remain alive, wind developers will never stop in spite of these truths.

The unpredictable output of Greed Energy requires keeping excessive conventional power generation sources online to ensure a consistent output of power.  And that is the Green Economy!

Weak and Unreliable

Or, more technically, Dilute and Intermittent.  Solar and Wind power, that is.

Unreliable Renewables [also blogged by Quixotes Can we rely on solar and wind, a rhetorical question if there ever was one.  Also, rhetorical, the Term, Renewables, to refer to alternate energy sources.  They aren’t renewable because it takes a lot of money, material and fossil fuel to get them up and running.  And when they are running, they can’t be relied on and need fossil fuels to supply the deficients in energy.  (Germany is the best example, it uses coal to backup its many turbines because they are so unreliable’ WORSE, the power bills are HUGE, to the point of inducing the phenomenon of ENERGY POVERTY among its citizens).

The exorbitant costs related to solar and wind have to do with making the panels and turbines, their erection and their start-up. Compared to  other sources of energy, hydro – nuclear- coal, these two are VERY expensive, because THEY ARE NOT FREE.

Which means, Solar and Wind are not affordable energy.

One of the main, if not the defining one, reasons for Green Energy is the Climate Scam (based on normal changing weather patterns as interpreted by all the (rich) Chicken Littles of the World). As a result, Ontario suffers terrible economic, social and medical problems because of Green Energy and we all suffer under this heavy load of Horse Manure (Goldstein, Toronto Sun). A heavy load dumped by Canada’s new Boy King and the Wicked Witch of the East, his fairy godmother:
Wind and solar power are simply not ready to replace the use of coal, oil and natural gas to produce energy. [and hydro & nuclear]
They aren’t reliable or efficient enough to deliver the power required to fuel modern industrialized countries like our own, or developing nations that want to become part of the first world, like China and India.
[and let us not forget the Towers of Power require diesel engines to run}

But we know this already, those of us who rail and demonstrate against the Whirligigs of the McWynne Mandate. It bears repeating, over and over again. And there was a similar scare in 1898:
…the Chicken Littles at the Paris conference should remind us of another gathering of similar worthies at the world’s first urban planning conference held in New York in 1898.
Back then, the delegates weren’t obsessed with fossil fuels but with horse manure. Literally.
In New York in 1898, 200,000 working horses each produced an average of 24 pounds of horse manure daily, meaning almost five million pounds of manure were being dumped on city streets every 24 hours.

The stuff was piled 60 ft high in city streets, and then came the electric street car and the gasoline engine to save the day (and eliminate the health problems posed by that much horse do-do). Science (not the bogus consensus “Science” of today’s climate crap), it is hoped, will save us from the Manure excreted at the Paris Conference and the regular dumps made by the UN. And let us not forget the BS and horse manure that passes for government in Ontario…

Aliens Made Me Do It

Three brilliant essays by Michael Crichton: Aliens cause Global Warming, Environmentalism as Religion, The Case for Skepticism on Global Warming [re-blogged from Quixotes Last Stand].

[quote] Cast your minds back to 1960. …And in Green Bank, West Virginia at the new National Radio Astronomy Observatory, a young astrophysicist named Frank Drake runs a two week project called Ozma, to search for extraterrestrial signals. A signal is received, to great excitement. It turns out to be false, but the excitement remains. In 1960, Drake organizes the first SETI conference, and came up with the now-famous Drake equation:

None of the variables in the equation was known, knowable or testable: they were guesses, and it took faith to believe in SETI (belief in something for which there is no proof). Then in the 1970’s came the Carl Sagan fiction about Nuclear Winter. an untestable and unprovable theory from which issued another equation with unknown, unknowable and untestable variables:
[quote] Sagan appeared on the Johnny Carson show 40 times. … Following the conference [on consequences of the Winter], there were press conferences, meetings with congressmen, and so on. The formal papers in Science came months later.

He and his followers were selling a product; they were not doing science: What we are doing here, however, is presenting a consensus of a very large group of scientists…” And consensus is the business of politics:
[quote] Finally, I would remind you to notice where the claim of consensus is invoked. Consensus is invoked only in situations where the science is not solid enough. Nobody says the consensus of scientists agrees that E=mc2. Nobody says the consensus is that the sun is 93 million miles away. It would never occur to anyone to speak that way.

[quote] What, then, can we say were the lessons of Nuclear Winter? I believe the lesson was that with a catchy name, a strong policy position and an aggressive media campaign, nobody will dare to criticize the science, and in short order, a terminally weak thesis will be established as fact. After that, any criticism becomes beside the point. The war is already over without a shot being fired. That was the lesson, and we had a textbook application soon afterward, with second hand smoke.

And now, Global Warming:
[quote] Nobody believes a weather prediction twelve hours ahead. Now we’re asked to believe a prediction that goes out 100 years into the future? And make financial investments based on that prediction? Has everybody lost their minds?
Well, the UN IPCC thinks so after there facts were changed:
[quote] The 1995 IPCC draft report said, “Any claims of positive detection of significant climate change are likely to remain controversial until uncertainties in the total natural variability of the climate system are reduced.” It also said, “No study to date has positively attributed all or part of observed climate changes to anthropogenic causes.” Those statements were removed, and in their place appeared: “The balance of evidence suggests a discernable human influence on climate.”

Ipso facto, Aliens cause Global Warming!
And Green Energy is “consensus science”, which is to say politics wrapped in the religion of Green, an Ontario speciality.
Read the other two essays, you’ll be edified.

Ontario Green Energy

…policy and law are the child of a failed and false myth called, Global Warming.  An Ontario premier and an Ontario Cabinet minister decided they wanted to leave a legacy, the one for posterity, the other for political advancement.  Both are gone, but what they have wrought is still here, still wasting hundreds of millions of dollars and costing people their health, their wealth and their wellbeing.

Lawrence Solomon writing in the Financial Post (Jan.09/15) makes his predictions for 2015: “The global warming enterprise provides one example. Since 2008, I have been predicting that the warmists, whose cause at root is based on faith and sustained by deceit, will fail to make the case that carbon represents a danger to the planet. Although the elites have mostly bought the deceits — all ultimately resting on jigged computer models — the masses mostly have not, as seen in public opinion polls throughout the world. The public’s rejection of the global warming orthodoxy then led politicians to slash subsidies to renewables and to scrap plans for carbon taxes. Political parties that high-handedly ignored the public by pushing global warming measures, such as Canada’s Liberal Party in 2008 and Australia’s Labour government in 2013, went down to crushing defeats.”
“As renewables lose momentum in 2015, fossil fuels will gain it. It can’t really be otherwise. If the glut we now see in oil and gas continues, the low prices that result will spur consumption. A rise in prices, on the other hand, would only further spur shale gas and oil development. Up or down, I predict, the environmental lobby loses the energy war, even if — should President Obama veto the Keystone XL Pipeline — it wins some battles.”

[also blogged by MAWT]

Thanks to this politically correct fiction of Global Warming, Ontario and its citizens continue to pay for the vanity of the original formulators of the province’s Green Energy illusions.

Flogging a Dead Government

Lorrie Goldstein, in Twenty Lies (OWR) the Liberals told you (London Free Press) enumerates 20 of the many lies and prevarications spewed by the McGuinty-Wynne government of Ontario. Ten would have been enough, but 20 or more are needed to keep flogging an almost-dead government. Politics, at the best of times, is a tricky business, but in Ontario it’s disgusting and dirty.

Here are the most egregious of the lies from our perspective (apart from the fact that the term, “Green Energy” itself is a huge whopper):
13. “We will shut down Ontario’s coal-burning plants by 2007”: The Liberals still haven’t closed them, now promising to do so in 2014.

14. “We will bring clean, renewable energy to Ontario”: Under the Liberals, wind and solar power are producing minuscule amounts of unneeded, unreliable, inefficient and expensive electricity, which has to be backed up by fossil fuels. This will, according to the Auditor General, cost Ontarians billions of dollars extra on their hydro bills, for decades to come.

15. “We will bring stability to Ontario’s electricity market”: See above.

16. “We will respect the views of rural constituents by giving their MPPs free votes”: If that was true, Liberal MPPs wouldn’t be responding to furious complaints from their constituents about having industrial wind turbines rammed down their throats with form letters.

17. “We will ensure that all developers play by the rules”: Unless they’re wind developers, where the Liberals took away the rights of local citizens to oppose wind projects.

Number 17, in particular, rankles…

Green SCAM also a SHAM

[Editor: Green Legislation in Ontario overrides other legislation meant to protect the health and habitat of citizens, livestock and wildlife, as well as the natural environment by imposing restrictions on property use.  But Turbines are immune to any such restrictions.  While the Endangered Species Act prohibits you from building or developing land where such species might exist, it is waived where turbine development is meant to take place.  Green legislation is not only a scam but also, and more particularly, a SHAM.  This SHAM contravenes all protections laid down in the so-called Charter of Rights.  A pity no legal firm is pursuing, pro bono, a Charter Challenge to the Green Energy Act; it would be a long, laborious and very expensive undertaking, but it should be done. Green Metaphors are seriously dangerous in Ontario.]

Keith Stelling of Arran Lake in Bruce County,  at the Toronto protest April 3rd addressed these words to Premier Wynne:  (re-blogged from OWR Ontario Wind Resistance.)

Welcome everyone from all over Ontario
Thank you for
taking the trouble
having the courage
being persistent

To tell Premier Wynne we are fed up with incompetent energy policy made by foreign multinational corporations.

We can’t afford 15% hydro bill increases! Our economy can’t afford subsidies to big energy corporations.

WIND ENERGY IS NOT CHEAP: we have to pay twice to cover the backup.

It’s often produced when we can’t use it. Then it has to be sold to the United States at below what it cost us to produce. Sometimes we even have to pay them to take it off our hands.

When there is lots of wind, emission-free water power and nuclear often have to be shut down—but we still pay for them!

There is no benign environmental footprint!

Wind turbines are destroying our wildlife habitats.

We’ve done our homework. The government has not.

WE BELIEVE THAT MINISTRY OF NATURAL RESOURCES issuing permits to destroy endangered species and their habitat is A SCANDAL AND ILLEGAL.

We resent being trivialized and called liars when government ministers and the industry tell us our health complaints are all in our heads—caused by jealousy!

We question the authority of the Chief Medical Officer of Health whose report claims there are no adverse health effects when Grey-Bruce MOH Hazel Lynn has found 24 peer reviewed studies that say there are!

We know that children who live beside the turbines and can’t sleep at home miss out on their education because they fall asleep in school.

We know that long term sleep deprivation causes lowered immunity.

(How much will moving the gas plant actually cost us? 6 billion?)

There is no rational basis for adding more wind energy to the grid

it threatens grid stability
makes electricity unaffordable
increases CO2 emissions
and is destroying our communities,
our health,
our wildlife
and our economy.

WE DO NOT INTEND TO GIVE UP our fight for social justice, PREMIER WYNNE.

It is time for YOU to CHANGE COURSE.

Stop approving wind turbines until you have done your homework!

We are not willing communities.
